Data Scientist (f/m/d)
Job description
We are currently seeking a new Climate Data Scientist for our Climate Policy Team based in Berlin. You will provide data science support for our flagship project, the Climate Action Tracker, as well as other projects that track and benchmark climate action across different sectors and countries. You will support the team’s analytical work in assessing the implications of current mitigation targets and policies for global temperature rise and understanding what transitions would be aligned with limiting warming to 1.5°C, taking into account what would be cost effective, aligned with sustainable development, and equitable.
Your Responsibilities
- You use and extend existing tools and pipelines in order to provide quantitative analyses of global, national and sectoral emissions pathways consistent with the Paris Agreement, including the Climate Action Tracker’s temperature assessment pipeline using a climate emulator model.
- You support policy analysts, modelers, and economists in the collection and analysis of varied and transdisciplinary datasets.
- You assist in the development of software to enhance the quantitative analyses and modelling critical to the core work of the team. This will include updating the team’s in-house tools for assessing how mitigation action can be fairly distributed between countries.
- You provide support to junior data analysts in the team.
- When required, you provide analytical support for negotiators from vulnerable countries in various climate and energy related fora.
- You contribute to the writing of reports, briefings, and scientific peer-reviewed publications.
Your profile
You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills:
- A Master’s degree in climate science, engineering, physics or a related field, PhD preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in a quantitative discipline with applied scientific software development and data analysis experience.
- Proven and very good programming skills in Python with knowledge on common programming approaches. Working knowledge of Excel is an asset.
- Experience in working in collaborative coding environments with multiple team members using version control (git) and unit testing.
- An interest in understanding and addressing climate change mitigation at national to international levels, and in working for impact.
- A background in climate science, mitigation, energy systems or economics is strongly recommended.
- Excellent English writing and verbal skills.
- A well-developed sense for teamwork and ability to interact with a diverse array of people.

- For the time being, we offer a contract limited to one year. There is a prospect of extension, and we are interested in long-term cooperation.
